A HERD of cows was rescued from the sea at Grouville on Thursday morning after some were blown by the wind around 300-metres offshore.

Thirteen of the 14 cows which went into the water were rescued successfully but Jersey Fire and Rescue Service have confirmed that one “sadly did not survive”.

“The cows appear to have walked along the beach and, when their safe exit was cut off by the high tide, they swam out to sea,” the fire service said in a statement.

The fire service raced to Le Hurel Slip to deal with the incident at around 6.40am, fastening ropes around the cows’ necks to tow them into shore. The St Catherine’s inshore lifeboat was also involved in the rescue.

Some of the animals had been blown out to sea by the wind and were around 300m offshore by the time rescuers arrived.

Rescuers could be seen by onlookers using blankets and towels to keep one of the cows warm after it was rescued.
