THE partial closure of Rouge Bouillon “could extend towards Easter”, according to the Infrastructure Department – with investigations and repair work “expected to take some time” after a burst water main caused a sinkhole last month.
In an update issued yesterday, the department said Rouge Bouillon remained closed between Clarendon Road and Palmyra Road due to “ongoing investigations into the stability of an adjacent building wall”.
Islanders have been advised to avoid the area since 18 December, when a hole appeared by the entrance to College Gardens – with the Jersey Fire and Rescue Service later confirming that it had been caused by a burst water main underneath the road.
“Comprehensive assessments are under way to determine the extent of the damage and establish the necessary remedial actions,” yesterday’s update continued.
“Multiple parties are involved, including Infrastructure and Environment, Jersey Water, structural engineers, building surveyors, loss adjusters and insurance companies.
“Private parties responsible for the affected buildings are undertaking detailed investigations and repair work, which are expected to take some time. Current estimates suggest the closure could extend towards Easter.”
The department acknowledged that the continued closure “has significant impacts on daily travel and the co-ordination of other essential roadworks”, but described the current situation as “necessary to ensure the safety of all road users and residents”.
It explained that the road would only reopen once the buildings were stabilised and “all risks of structural collapse have been mitigated”.
“Your patience and co-operation are appreciated as we work to resolve this matter and ensure the safety of all Islanders,” it added. A further update is expected next week.
