Man (27) who planned mass killing at former school with flame thrower sentenced for terrorism offences

Daniel Michael McMillan. (38841898)

A 27-YEAR-OLD man who planned to carry out a mass killing with a flame thrower at his former school has been sentenced for terrorism offences.

The Royal Court heard that Daniel McMillan had an “obsession with killing people”.

The court also heard he had the means to do so.

During searches, police officers found an axe and equipment in his home to make a flame thrower, as well as information useful for terrorists and indecent images of children on his computer.

McMillan, who will be detained in a secure facility for treatment for an indefinite period of time, devised plans to kill pupils at his former school of Les Quennevais, in revenge for bullying he said he had been subject to there.

McMillan visited his targeted school, during which he took reconnaissance photographs on his mobile phone.

Crown Advocate Luke Sette, prosecuting, said interviews with McMillan and searches he had made on the internet showed he had a fascination with violence and “an obsession with killing people”.

The advocate added: “He enjoyed the distress and suffering of others.”

McMillan was also sentenced for having unlawful sex by having intercourse with a 15-year-old girl when he was 17, and for possessing indecent images of children.

The court heard from psychiatrist Dr Bradley Hillier, who said that McMillan’s autism made it difficult for him to empathise and understand how his thoughts or actions would affect other people.

Advocate James Bell, defending, pointed out that McMillan had already spent a long spell in custody, and said he had co-operated with authorities.

Of his offences, he said: “These are all wrapped up in his mental-health problems.”

Since his arrest, McMillan has remained in police custody and at a secure facility in the UK, where he will remain indefinitely.

He was also placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register and banned from going near school or nurseries for ten years.
