PASSENGERS should prepare to wave goodbye to their free view of the runway at Jersey Airport as Ports of Jersey are replacing the viewing deck with a “premium” paid-for lounge.
The upstairs atrium is somewhat of a hidden gem for travellers who want to escape the busy terminal to a quieter space.
But Ports this week announced plans to create a premium catered lounge next year, and following queries from the JEP the organisation confirmed it would be replacing the free space.
Access to the current upstairs lounge has already been restricted as work on the renovation begins.
Ports said an “alternative” quiet space would be provided upstairs at the airport, separate from the lounge, which will be operated by travel hospitality firm No1 Lounges.
Paying passengers will be able to access complimentary seasonal hot dishes, snacks and premium drinks as well as unlimited WIFI, according to Ports.
No1 Lounges already operates 15 airport lounges around the UK, including London Heathrow.
Departing passengers will be able to access the lounge by using airline frequent flyer schemes, some credit card programmes or by walking in for a fee, which Ports of Jersey said would be published ahead of the opening date next summer, when asked by this newspaper.
The development forms part of Ports of Jersey’s long-term plan to renovate Jersey Airport’s departures and arrivals terminals.
Improvements have already been taking place over recent months with the introduction of new security machines and body scanners as well as a fast track and an enhanced assisted travel service.
The next phase of work in departures is due to start at the end of 2025, which will see self-service bag drops installed, a redesigned terminal with a ‘”Jersey feel”, and a greater choice of shopping, food and drink.
Plans are also under way to “sensitively integrate” the listed 1937 building in the renovation.
Ports of Jersey chief executive Matt Thomas said they were “looking forward to being able to provide this stylish sanctuary from the busy terminal”.
Mr Thomas added: “Our aim is to create a friendly, easy-to-use airport, fit for the needs and expectations of today’s travellers, that Jersey can be truly proud of. We want our airport to celebrate Jersey’s unique heritage and identity, creating a relaxing start to customers’ journeys.”
No1 Lounges managing director Rami El-Dahshan said: “We’re passionate about creating a lounge experience that reflects the spirit of the Island.”
