ISLANDER Jack Kennedy has been selected to represent Ireland at the FISU World University Triathlon Championships, set to be held in Gdansk, Poland, across today and tomorrow.
Currently training hard, Kennedy said: “My training has been going really well here in Scotland, following a stint training away in France.
“I’m honoured to represent Ireland and my university in what will no doubt be a highly competitive race.”
The Stirling-based triathlete is currently training with the performance squad at Stirling University, coached by Crawford Whyte and Marc Austin.
The biannual championships will be raced over sprint distance, which includes a 750m swim, 20km bike and a 5km run.
Kick-starting the event yesterday, the opening ceremony took place at Brzezno Beach, the site of the contest’s swimming stage.
The swim will involve one lap around the 750m sea course, starting on the beach, followed by a 150m run to the transition area.
Once on his bike, Kennedy will face four loops of the 5km bike Asphalt-surface course, finishing with two laps of the 2.5km flat running course.
Kennedy will be competing against representatives from 25 different countries.
The competition is to be the first of three season-ending races for Kennedy, with the triathlete also planning to race in the British Super Series Grand Final and the Irish National Championships over the coming month.
“I’ve been fortunate enough to have raced away a lot this season,” he said.
“That is only possible with support from my coaching team at university and the support I receive here on Island from Ravenscroft, Lou Lou Race Foundation and Big Maggy’s.”
