DEAN and Charlie Lowe’s killer is due to be sentenced in the Royal Court today for causing their deaths in a hit-and-run collision.
Dylan John Pounds (29) faces years behind bars after being convicted of two counts of death by dangerous driving following a high-profile trial in October.
Mr Lowe (48) and his 11-year-old son, Charlie, were killed in Rue de Fauvic, Grouville, on the evening of 5 August last year.
Pounds pleaded guilty to causing their deaths by careless driving and also admitted failing to stop and report an accident.
However, he denied the more serious charges of causing the deaths by dangerous driving, which can carry a far longer jail term. But jurors returned unanimous guilty verdicts.
Pounds had been drinking heavily all afternoon before getting behind the wheel of his van, was speeding and had been distracted by a mobile phone, the Royal Court heard during a week of evidence in the six-day trial.
Pounds and his victims were in the same venue, the Pembroke pub in Grouville, hours before he would end their lives. The 29-year-old was there with a friend as part of a day of drinking while Mr Lowe and his son were attending a family birthday party.
“They wouldn’t have known that two hours later the same man would be responsible for ending their lives,” Crown Advocate Matthew Maletroit, prosecuting, said during the trial.
There was weeping in the Royal Court as Pounds was convicted at the end of October.
In a statement given to the press and public on the steps of the Royal Court following the conviction, Inspector David Turnbull said the “tragic deaths last August have left an indelible mark on our Island community”.
Pounds’ sentencing hearing was due to begin this afternoon. Insp Turnbull is expected to give a statement on behalf of the States police following the court case.
